New Design is statement (after essay)
Design is a process involving research, problem solving, and is a limitless form of communication.
Good or Bad Team mate?
Thinking about how well I work in a group environment, I have written both the good and bad personality traits about me. I found that it was so much easier to realize the bad things about myself then it was to think about the good. I know I need to learn on some things to improve my working skills, but not everyone is perfect. There is always room to improve. In my case I think the good over powers the bad because I can improve on my bad traits. I can learn to be more organized and try to be a little more talkative in group discussions so I do not seem to be aloof. I think that will help me a lot to be not only be a better worker but a better person overall.
The Good
2. Co-operative
3. Hard working
4. Trustworthy
5. Intelligent
The Bad
1. Complacent
2. Disorganized
3. Aloof
4. Stubborn
5. Rigid

Influence?

My biggest influence would have to be my mother. She's more than my mom, she's my best friend. We have such a great bond, and we get along so great. She inspires me on so many levels and has been there for me at my best and my worst. She believes in me and always reassures me that I can do anything I put my mind to. I always come to her when I am doing an assignment for school and even though she does not fully understand the graphic design world she makes me see things from a different perspective. She is smart, and has a passion for life. I hope one day to be as great as she is <3
My Manifesto
1. Always carry a pencil and paper
I always get my most creative ideas when I least expect it. On the bus, before I go to bed, at work, or at the mall. So I always carry around a pencil and paper just incase something pops into my head and jot it down.
2. Travel
If you see the world, those experiences will benefit you. Seeing other peoples way of life can change the way you think and see your own life. You can also be very influenced by different cultures.
3. Read
The more you read the more knowledge you gain. Even if its just reading the newspaper on the bus ride to school, you still learn about the world. Some people find reading boring, why not read something you do enjoy.
4. Always be positive
Negativity will get you no where! You have so much to live for and life is too short, so why waste it by being upset all the time. Even if you are brain blocked and cannot think of any ideas at the moment, believe in yourself.
5. Relax, take it easy
Its good to take a break. When you are all caught up with your work sometimes a break can refresh your mind and something new will eventually come to you. Its good to come back to your work with a clear head.
6. Practice makes perfect
Its always a good thing to practice what you are good at. Drawing, dancing, writing, whatever your good at practices always makes perfect.
7. Block the haters!
There will always be someone hating on you, no matter what you do. Just remember if they are hating its only because they are jealous. Haters talk about others because they are insecure about themselves so they talk about others to make themselves bigger, when in reality they are not.
8. Take risks
Like my friend Dan Ko would say, "You gotta risk it, for the biscuit!". Take risks because it will make you a stronger person. Nobody is perfect but you will always learn from your mistakes.
9. Take criticism
Sometimes you cant see things others can. Everyone has different views so sometimes its good to see things from someone else's eyes. Not only can this help you in your work but it will also improve your work.
10. Dream!
Never give up on your goals and dreams! Life is what you make of it!

Design is - my statement
Design is an expression created from a thought or emotion. It is more than just an artistic ability, it contains great purpose. May involve research to attract a specific target market. It is constantly changing but is never wrong.
My dream vacation
Ever since I was a little one my ultimate dream was to see the world. Last summer it was my first time out of the country and went to Colombia to visit family. It was an amazing experience and after that I made it a goal in my life to travel to at least one place a year since then. My dream place to travel to would have to be Dubai. Why Dubai you may ask? My reason is because Dubai has such amazing architecture. The hotels, mosques and homes are designed so different and their way of designing is so futuristic. They are so much more advanced with their way of designing architecture it blows me away each time I see images. The video above is of a new building that is currently being planned to be built. It will be a building that will be constantly rotating and changing its shape, amazing huh?
here is another video with more indept information:
Technology is all around us!
Reading week is over and throughout my week off from school I calculated how much time I spent with different forms of technology. Its insane to see how many hours I spend doing each but then realized that were living in a very technology driven world and the world keeps changing due to technology. The technology around now will most likely be improved upon in the next few years considering the fact that since the year 2000 we have experienced more changes then the world has seen before. Here is my technology usage for the week:
- Reading a)books b)newspapers c)magazines
- Listening to a)radio (internet or transitional)
- Listening to music (via Itunes or mp3)
- Watching TV, DVD
- On email (# msgs)
- a)surfing web b)social media Facebook
- Video games (web or system)
- a)mins on cellphone (#txt msgs)
Calculations:
- 3 hours spent on reading (on the bus and at home)
- 30 mins spent on listening to radio (in the car)
- 54 hours spent on listening to music (via Itunes and mp3)
- 8 hours spent on watching TV, DVD (shows 90210 and bachelor, DVD the breakup and legally blonde)
- 20 mins spent on email (2 msgs)
- 45 hours spent on surfing web and Facebook
- 2 hours spent on video games (web and brothers mario games)
- 32 hours spent on cellphone (86 txt msgs)
= 145 hours and 50 mins spent on reading week using technology.
Jazz Cd Design
My class was assigned to design a cd design for Humber's Jazz Ensemble new cd which would be called Prologue. I was excited because I thought it would be a fun and interesting assignment but at the same time I knew a lot of research would have to be done because I know nothing about Jazz. I have never listened to Jazz and am not a huge fan of the genre so in order to design this cd I had a lot to do before creation of the design. My process included:
- Listening to Humber's previous Jazz cd.
- Read and understand the definition of Prologue.
- Brainstorm rough ideas/sketches.
- Look at different fonts and colors that represent Jazz.
- Took breaks in between to eat and surf the net to refresh my mind.
- Design a rough concept on template given.
- Critiqued numerous times by Heather.
- Fix design with suggestions made by Heather.
- Find the right image of stage curtains for design.
- Print final cd design at Canclone.
- Present cd design to Jazz Band Director.

How do I create?
When watching the Ken Robinson TED talk in school, I thought the quote he said, "We don't grow into creativity, we get educated out of it" made a lot of sense to me and I could really relate to it. Throughout all of high school my favorite classes were Visual Arts and Computer Media studies. My parents, classmates and even teachers told me all the time to focus more on other subjects because those classes that I enjoyed most were not as important. Classes such as math, science and english are weighed more than Visual Arts and Computer Media studies because not only are they mandatory but are also referred to as the "smarter classes". In grade 12 I decided to listen to my gut and go with what makes me happy. Why have a career in something you do not enjoy just because it makes more money? I rather have a career doing something I love to do even if it means making less money.
When discussing the Robinson talk, I noticed that we are all taught at such a young age to not make mistakes. How does this way of learning help us? It doesn't! The only way you will learn in anything you do is by making mistakes, mistakes should be embraced. In school we are taught that mistakes should not be made yet no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, its a part of life, growing and learning. Our class then discussed on the different ways that we learn. I learn by making mistakes, experience, by doing, seeing and moving. I cannot sit and read a textbook when I study, Its just not me. I learn so much better by actually doing it.
When listening to the excerpted 100 Habits list, I noticed that learning plays a big part in creativity. Of the suggestions discussed from the 100 Habits list I related most to: travel as much as possible, keep creativity alive by any means and you are what you eat. Traveling is number 1 for me because I would love to see different parts of the world. I have always been fascinated by culture and architecture, I think it would benefit me a lot in my creativity to see how others have created around the world. Keeping creativity is important because you should practice it when ever you can. To keep your mind active and in that creative stage. It should become a part of your daily routine, even something simple such as sketching will help a lot. You are what you eat is also helpful because making food out of ingredients allows you to be creative. Adding ingredients you might not know that will make your meal taste good would be like an experiment each time you cook.
The 3 habits that I choose have a lot to say about my creative process. It goes back to prove that I learn by making mistakes, experiences, by doing, seeing and moving. In the context of creativity and design I am most of all a visual person. Which is why I am glad I went with my gut in gr 12 and choose the career path that I did. Classes such as Visual Arts and Computer Media studies should not be viewed as worthless because they get you to think and use your mind like math and science cannot. In Visual Arts and Computer Media studies there is no right and wrong because you are using your imagination. In Math and Science you are either right or wrong, how can you expect to learn and grow when you cannot embrace your mistakes?

Mr. President

During the election campaign Barack Obama's face was plastered on televisions, magazines, newspapers, ads and in art pieces. This art piece is one of my favorites and I love the contrast of colors. It has a pop art feel to it and the colors used represent the colors of the American flag.
I hope things do actually change like how Mr. President has been quoting in his speeches because we all know as Canadians sooner or later any impact will also affect us. Hopefully the economy will pick up and the future will become brighter for all us. The best thing to do now is too keep dreaming and never stop believing.

KanYe's futuristic city

I had the urge of downloading some new songs for my ipod today because my songs were a little too out of date. I began browsing some of my favorite artists websites to listen to some of their new songs. Thats when i saw a website that really caught my attention. It was singer Kanye Wests website and it is probably one of the most interesting music artists pages I've seen. Kanye West himself in my opinion is such an interesting artist so its no wonder that his website would be so unique. The design of the website has a japanese style to it with a blend of futuristic graphics. The scene is of a city and the graphics also move. I think the overall design of the website is so fascinating and really creative. Check it out:

Design is?
Design is an expression of emotion using creativity and a goal in mind to communicate with others. A plan and research is often needed to create a design and because of this it gives great meaning and purpose. It is limitless and is general because design is everywhere.
Design is important because it can touch people from within. It is its own language in itself and sometimes it does not need an explanation. You can sense the emotion and reason behind it when looking at it and it can affect you greatly. It is another form of communication that people may not be able to express with words but through their creativity. An individual who has had great thought to construct it creates design. It is not created from thin air because it is created from a source and sometime various ones.
When I experience good design I want to share it with the world. It fascinates me and it can occupy my mind and thoughts for a long time if it has truly spoken to me in a way other designs have not. It excites me to know that I am living in a time where everything is affected by design, because it is a lifestyle.
I chose to be a designer in grade 9 because I am not only a visual person but I enjoy using my creative mind. I took art every year in high school and I loved it. I always had the urge to express myself through design. Using my creative skills to tackle on a problem has always interest me.
When I design I feel a great accomplishment but most of all happiness because I enjoy it. I learn about design more each day and my knowledge has helped me with my creations. I love planning and then executing my ideas to create my designs. It allows me to think outside the box because with design you can be as creative as you can be. Design is about using your imagination and letting your mind run free.
